Dental emergencies to look out for

Tooth pain

Tooth pain or severe toothache

Persistent or sudden tooth pain can be a sign of infection, decay, or another underlying problem. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the tooth, as this may irritate the tissues or cause bleeding. Over-the-counter pain relief such as Panadol or Ibuprofen can provide temporary relief, but it’s important to arrange an emergency appointment as soon as possible.

dislodged tooth

Knocked-out or dislodged tooth (dental trauma)

If a tooth has been knocked out, time is critical. Handle the tooth only by the crown (the white part), never the root. If possible, gently place it back into its socket. If that’s not an option, keep the tooth moist in cold milk or inside your cheek, and seek dental care immediately. Quick action greatly improves the chance of saving the tooth.

Broken or chipped tooth

Broken or chipped tooth

A cracked or fractured tooth can cause pain and leave the tooth vulnerable to infection. Rinse your mouth gently with warm water, keep any broken fragments, and see a dentist as soon as you can for proper assessment and repair.

Knocked-out filling or crown

Knocked-out filling or crown

If a filling or crown becomes loose or falls out, keep it safe and avoid chewing on that side of your mouth. Temporary dental cement (available at most pharmacies) can sometimes provide short-term protection until you can see us.

Oral or facial trauma

Oral or facial trauma

Accidents, falls, or sports injuries can cause damage to the lips, tongue, jaw, or teeth. Rinse the injured area with water, apply a cold compress to reduce swelling, and arrange prompt dental or medical care.

loose braces

Broken or loose braces or orthodontic appliances

Damaged braces or wires can cause pain or injury to the inside of your mouth. Avoid adjusting or bending the wire yourself. Instead, cover any sharp edges with orthodontic wax if available and schedule an urgent repair appointment.

Tooth sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity or sudden temperature sensitivity

While mild sensitivity can sometimes be managed with special toothpaste, sudden or severe sensitivity may signal enamel damage, decay, or gum issues. A dental check-up is the best way to identify the cause and find the right solution.

Swelling of the gums

Swelling or infection

Swelling of the gums, face, or jaw often points to an abscess or infection, which can spread quickly if left untreated. This is considered urgent. Contact us immediately so we can provide the care you need.

Right responses to dental emergencies

  • Stay calm – We know it’s easier said than done, but keeping calm will help you think clearly and take the right steps.
  • Control any bleeding – Use clean gauze or a soft cloth to apply gentle pressure to the area.
  • Protect lost teeth or fragments – If a tooth or piece has broken off, keep it safe and moist (in milk or your cheek) until you can see us.
  • Know when to escalate – If bleeding won’t stop, swelling spreads rapidly, or you have trouble breathing or swallowing, call 000 or go straight to a hospital emergency department.
  • Be cautious with medication – Never place aspirin directly on your tooth or gums, as this can cause irritation or harm.
  • Call us as soon as you can – Contact our friendly team on (07) 3848 8002. We’ll give you immediate advice and arrange the earliest possible appointment.
